Henry Parkes Centre
Cultural Infrastructure - Award Winner Division A
The Henry Parkes Centre, a major cultural tourism precinct incorporating the Parkes Visitor Information Centre and 4 unique collections including The King's Castle Elvis Exhibit, Parkes Motor Museum, Parkes Museum and Antique Machinery collection, was completed and opened in 2010.
At a cost of $4.6million, the precinct was one of Council's major infrastructure projects for 2010 and demonstrates a commitment to community development by fostering cultural tourism.
The Henry Parkes Centre provides an excellent example of a successful Council/ community partnership, with Council owning and managing the complex and working with tourism stakeholders, the Historical Society, Antique Motor Club and Philanthropist Greg Page to create a series of impressive displays, collections, exhibitions and associated interpretations.
This project drew on the cooperation of a number of community groups and stakeholders, along with significant internal inter-departmental cooperation, resources and skills from across Council being utilised to establish, manage and implement the project.
