Australian Accent : the designs of Annan Fabrics and Vande Pottery in the '40s and '50s
Mosman Municipal Council (3 other projects)
Australian Accent showcases two Mosman businesses which featured distinctive 'Australian' designs using native flora, fauna and Aboriginal motifs. It includes examples of the bold silk screen prints produced by Annan Fabrics, popular as modern furnishings for the international and domestic marketplace and the handcrafted ceramic pieces by Vande Pottery produced for the thriving tourism scene of the 1950s.
The exhibition featured significant loans from the Powerhouse Museum, Historic Houses Trust, Ballarat Regional Gallery and RMIT Design Archives in Victoria. The exhibition also received loans from private collectors.
This exhibition is the first time that Mosman Art Gallery (in collaboration with Mosman Library) has initiated a design based exhibition which reveals a part of Mosman's heritage that is linked closely with broader Australian history and the development of national identity. A 27 page catalogue and extensive public and education programs accompanied the exhibition.
